Introduction

As a health care provider, the nursing assistant must be aware of the patient’s current nutritional status, dietary needs and consider any cultural or religious preferences the patient may have.  Cultural and religious considerations must also be given when dealing with the patient’s level of comfort/pain.

The Prompt:   Mrs. Mashima is an 83 year old female admitted to your unit for complications with CHF. She has a history of Diabetes. You deliver her breakfast tray with eggs and sausage, toast, and coffee. Upon returning to collect her tray you note she has not eaten the eggs or the sausage. She nibbled the toast and drank all the coffee. What do you do?  At lunch, you delivered a tray consisting of a pork chop with steamed rice, a side salad, and a diet soda. She ate the salad and drank half of the soda. What do you do? What considerations should you note? What would you ask Mrs. Mashima? What do you tell the nurse?
