Psychologists equate individual awareness to a stream that is always evolving while also moving effortlessly. In the last 24 hours, I have encountered two levels of human consciousness.

Normal waking awareness is the condition of consciousness in which I am awake and completely conscious of my ideas, sentiments, emotions, surroundings, and experiences. In this phase, my cerebral functioning is quite busy, my perceptual processes are engaged, I am generally conscious of my surroundings, and I have a strong sense of time and location. During this condition, I may feel detached from my current environment. My engagement with actuality is largely replaced by fiction; this subliminal condition is known as daydreaming, and I frequently encounter such periods several instances per day.

Sleep is defined as a normal recurring phenomenon in which the body and mind rest. During sleep, I have altered cognition, restricted perceptual processes, suppressed active muscle, and little involvement with my surroundings. If my cellphone calls, I strain to respond to it, and whenever I do, the other individual readily assumes I am unconscious.

-REM, which stands for rapid eye movements, is the phase during which dreams unfold. In this period, the brain is extremely engaged, and all bodily tissues are normally immobilized with the exclusion of the heart and respiration organs.
