Persuasive essay
Dear Amy,
Hi, how are you doing? It’s been a month since we last spoke. I hope you have settled well in your new job. Lately, I have been thinking of you and your family especially little Katie, Anne told me that you are still considering enrolling her in a deaf school so I am writing this letter to try and convince you to take her to a mainstream school instead because I think that it will be better for her in the long run.
Katie is one of the brightest little girls I have ever interacted with and I think that regular school will be a good fit for her as she will have no problem adjusting to the system. Because most of her day to day interactions is with hearing people anyway i.e. her siblings and friends, I think that she will have no problem socializing with her peers in school. Also her cochlear implants have improved her hearing so much and she is already adjusted to it I do not see any benefit of her joining a deaf school.
The deaf school is already too far from home and that will mean that she has to spend a lot of time commuting to school. At six she is also too young to enroll as a boarding student which will not only deprive her from her friends but also her family. Furthermore, the mainstream school is nearer and she can take the bus together with her siblings every morning and you do not have to drive her to school yourself.
I have heard that one of the main reason that you want Katie to attend deaf school is so that she can learn American sign language and interact with other deaf children. Well the mainstream school has other hearing impaired kids and the school also provides a trained teacher for the deaf who teaches American sign language. Besides the academic standards at a mainstream school are higher than the deaf school therefore Katie will not have a problem when pursuing higher education later in life because they are more recognizable and are governed by the same education board. Also attending a deaf school may course her speech development to derail as deaf schools concentrate more on sign language. In a mainstream school she will have a chance of developing both her spoken language and her sign language as the school also provides a speech therapist for deaf children and other kids who have problems with speech development.
Finally taking Katie to a mainstream school will be better for her because she will be better adjusted to interact with the outside world. Because most of the world is hearing, learning to interact with it from a young age will be good for her unlike in deaf school where she will be mostly surrounded by other deaf people and might have to later adjust to the hearing world which might end up being frustrating for her. Being able to adjust to both the hearing and deaf world will also mean that she will be open to more opportunities in any career that she chooses.
My friend I really hope that you will consider letting Katie go to a mainstream school with her siblings as this is the least likely to interrupt with her world as she knows it
Love,
