Importance of legends
Most societies in the world have a traditional legend that they pass down from one generation to the other. Legends are stories especially of a person who seem to have accomplishes a great feat, legends usually depict a hero and depict them as doing great things mostly without any proof. Although legends are often made up of real events and personalities, they tend to exaggerate the events or the accomplishment of the people involved (diffen, n.d.). The legend of king Arthur for examples is an example of a legend that has been passed down to generations of Britons even though there has been no proof of his existence.
Legends are important because if you dig well enough they can provide a look into events that happened in the past and can help scientist with clues on geological occurrences that happened in the past (Zielinski, 2014). Legends also help us to know the values that the people of a certain era upheld or held dear. Legend can help us catch a glimpse of the human experience and the perspective of the people who lived in that time. Through legends people can be able to see the differences and similarities of today’s society and past societies.
Legends help in the teaching of timeless values like bravery and honesty and overall human goodness especially to the younger generations (diffen. n.d.). This is because many legends contain timeless and universal themes that are still relevant in today’s society. Through telling of legends it can help in instilling good values to the younger generation.
