To determine whether there is a relationship between the beliefs regarding gay people’s right to marry among each other and feelings towards liberals, a correlation test and linear regression test were performed then a scatter plot was drawn. Traditionally, 0.05 is the standard alpha value used to determine the significance of statistical tests. Therefore, the linear regression test was statistically significant at the α=.05, β = 4.286, t (289) = 4.129, p < .001 0r 4.787E-05, r2 = 0.0559.
For a correlation test to be statistically significant, the p-value has to be less than the alpha value, and r, which is the correlation coefficient, has to range between +1 to -1 and should not be equal to one. Therefore, the test was statistically significant because the p-value (4.787E-05) is less than the alpha value. Similarly, our correlation coefficient (r= 0.24) is not equal to zero but ranges between positive and negative one, meaning our test is significant.
The relationship between the two variables is linear, weak, and positive. The relationship is linear because the regression equation (y = 4.2855x + 48.496) shows the variables are changed at a constant rate satisfying the equation Y = ax + b; this equation graphs a straight line. The relationship is weak because most of the points on the scatter plot are sparsely concentrated on the trendline. Similarly, r is 0.24, which shows a weak relationship between variables. The relationship is positive because r is a positive number and the regression equation also shows a positive correlation.
R2, the coefficient of determination (can also represent the effect size). R2 = 0.0559 shows that feelings towards liberals account for approximately 6% variance in beliefs regarding gay person’s right to marry among each other. The coefficient of determination also indicates a weak effect size, which means the sample might have been too weak to power the study. Our beta value (β = 4.286) also shows a positive linear relationship between the two variables.
In conclusion, beliefs regarding gay people’s right to marry and feelings towards liberals are positively significantly related. This means that people who view liberals positively also consider the right for gay people to marry each other positively; do not have a problem with gay marriages. The government can use the results of this study to supplement their investigation when investigating policies, they may want to implement related to the study’s variables.
