The United Nations defends people’s right to freedom of expression and information. In Mexico, journalists are facing a burgeoning threat for doing their jobs. They are subject to hate speech and physical intimidation from government officials or online trolling by pro-government supporters. In Mexico, political supporters of different parties have stigmatized the media in a bid to gag the free flow of information. The chart above indicates that 31 journalists have been killed in Mexico in the last three years for doing their work. It is important for people to come together and join the Reporters Without Borders (RSF) to voice their concerns about the freedom of expression and information on online platforms, such as Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram on the 31st of December, 2021. Standing for human dignity and freedom of expression on New Year’s Eve will help pass the message to the government officials not only in Mexico but other countries.
