The Psychology of Dreams
Dreams can be defined as a series of visions or thoughts and they arise during sleep. Many theories trying to explain dreams exist but none has succeeded in interpreting them or telling their meaning. These theories explain why we dream but does not give meanings to these dreams. Sleep is a process involving five stages and the fifth is called Rapid Eye Movement (REM) which makes up to 25% of adult sleep (Brescia University, 2016). Dream can last up to thirty minutes and people can dream up to six times in one night. Some researchers such as William Domhoff have stated that dreams do not necessarily serve a real purpose although this has been disputed has dream interpreters continue to get popular. Some experts believe that dreams do have meanings and this is achieved through interpretations (Cherry,2019).
I had a dream that I had gone for shopping in a crowded shopping mall. I was busy doing my shopping when suddenly I heard a loud bang coming from the entrance of the mall. This was followed by loud screams of people trying running in all directions. I tried to scream but my mouth could not let out a scream. I was in the middle of the isle and scared to death. I tried to force a scream but still my mouth could not let out any sound. At this point I realized that the building was collapsing and I was going to fall from the third floor. I could feel my body falling down but before I could reach the ground I woke up from my sleep. According to some dream interpreters, dreaming of falling is a common dream that is interpreted as a symbol of fear in real life (Cherry,2020). It is a sign that a person needs to let go and enjoy life more. Lately, I have been thinking a lot about my career and my future. I fear not being successful in life.
