Unit 3 Discussion CM460 Knowing Your Audience

Logically, the more a communicator knows about the background and needs of the involved audience, the better and easy it will be for the communicator to prepare a speech and ensure positive impacts through the presented speech. As a result, it remains one of the most crucial aspects in developing any speech. The main reason, in this case, is that this knowledge helps a communicator use the information in building a common ground between him or her and the audience involved. As a result, a speaker will focus on the right content and, most importantly, embrace the right tone of delivering a specific message depending on how the audience views different factors like generation ethnicity, generation, social class, ethnicity, and others Hendrix & Wong, 2014).

One of Hofstede’s (1980) cultural dimensions is power distance. This dimension can be considered a degree to which a community accepts or unequally rejects the distribution of power in organizations and societies. Power distance culture is important in the global environment as it helps in ensuring the healthy execution of interactions, relations, and communications between people. Another cultural dimension is uncertainty avoidance. It focuses on the degree to which societies tolerate or become uncomfortable with specific changes, risks, and situational uncertainty. Uncertainty avoidance is important in global environments as it helps in reducing the possibilities of unusual and unknown circumstances from happening while focusing on changes that influence positive outcomes (Chun et al. 2021). The impacts of these elements on me can be related to their influence on my understanding of different people or societies with the primary aim of ensuring effective relationships, communications, and understandings. Besides, the elements have also impacted me in a professional situation as I will need to focus first on understanding other people’s backgrounds to create an environment of understanding.
