Leadership is a trait that involves persuading and motivating people to work towards accomplishing specific goals and objectives. An individual’s leadership style describes how they relate to people, their position, and their success in the role of leadership. I am currently a manager at a cigar lounge that includes a restaurant and full bar. I manage a total of 42 employees. During the process, I choose to use the consultative therapy style. This leadership style combines and borrows certain aspects of both democratic and autocratic leadership styles in management. Consultative leadership style recognizes that the other staff members have the knowledge and capability to handle some of the situations that arise at work and uses team-building and others’ skills to make plans. Managers tend to involve the employees in decision-making and consult on their views before taking action (Kissane-Lee et al., 2016). The employees are allowed to make small-scale decisions in their line of work, although the final decision is up to the manager.
The consultative leadership style has both benefits and disadvantages. This leadership tends to take up much time, especially when making decisions for urgent tasks. The decision-making process may also take up much time. Managing two enterprises and many employees can be tasking which makes it hard to keep up with management. Managing two parts of an enterprise and many employees makes this task more difficult than in smaller enterprises. Some employees may have conflicting opinions about some decisions that can interfere with work and their relationships (Shahidi, 2017). The advantages, however, outweigh the disadvantages as the style works best in this line of work. Getting insight from the employees can help give opinions that they feel will boost sales and ensure job satisfaction (Shahidi, 2017). This style also enhances team engagement and creativity.
