Are there differences in the average agreement with gay individuals having the right to marry one another among people who were interviewed in different geographic regions of the United States

Research Question.

Questions:

1. Research Question One: Are there differences in the average agreement with gay individuals having the right to marry one another among people who were interviewed in different geographic regions of the United States?
a. Write a possible corresponding research hypothesis for this research question. Your response should be about 25 words in length.

There is a mean difference in the agreement that gay individuals have the right to marry one another for participants from Northeast, South, Midwest, and West regions.

Null hypothesis (H0): The is no significant difference in the mean agreement that gay individuals have the right to marry one another for participants from Northeast, South, Midwest, and West regions.

Alternative hypothesis (H1): The is a significant difference in the mean agreement that gay individuals have the right to marry one another for participants from Northeast, South, Midwest, and West regions.

b. Select the appropriate inferential test for this research question. Your response should be about 25 words in length.

  • One-way between subject ANOVA- Tukey test, Homogeneity of variance, Welch, Brown-Forsythe
  • Confidence level.

c. Justify your choice of inferential test for this research question, including how the scales of measurement affect this decision. Your response should be about 25 to 50 words in length.

This research question is a descriptive comparative question that uses a quasi-experimental design. The question is using it a quasi-experimental designn because my predictor variable, the variable being manipulated, and a nominal variable is a preexisting variable. My predictor variable is the regions the participants were from, these regions could not be changed. A quasi-experimental design is known to use inferential tests that compare means. For this research question, the independent variable has three levels. A one way between subject ANOVA is a test used to compare means for a study with an independent variable with two or more levels.

Confidence level test is used to determine to what level the is test significant, if the test is actually significant.

2. Research Question Two: Are there differences in the average feelings of warmth toward liberals among people who were interviewed in different geographic regions of the United States?

a. Write a possible corresponding research hypothesis for this research question. Your response should be about 25 words in length.

There is a mean difference in the scores for the feeling of warmth towards liberals for participants living in the Northeast, South, Midwest, and West regions.

Null hypothesis (H0): There is no significant difference in mean scores for the feeling of warmth towards liberals for participants living in Northeast, South, Midwest, and West regions.

Alternative hypothesis (H1): There is a significant difference in mean scores for the feeling of warmth towards liberals for participants living in Northeast, South, Midwest, and West regions.

This research question is similar to the one above; the only difference is that they have a different outcome variable (dependent variable). The outcome variable for this research question measures the feeling of warmth towards liberals, and the other measures the level of agreement towards gay marriage. Since we are comparing means in a predictor variable with more than two levels, we will use a one-way between-subject ANOVA. To find what level the test is significant if it is significant, we will use the confidence level test.

3. Research Question Three: Is there a linear relationship between feelings toward liberals and beliefs regarding gay persons’ right to marry one another?
a. Write a possible corresponding research hypothesis for this research question. Your response should be about 25 words in length.

There is a significant linear correlation (positive or negative) between beliefs regarding gay persons’ right to marry one another and people’s feelings towards liberals.

Null hypothesis (H0): There is no significant relationship (positive or negative) between people’s beliefs regarding gay persons’ right to marry one another and people’s feelings towards liberals.

Alternative hypothesis (H1): There is a significant relationship (positive or negative) between people’s beliefs regarding gay persons’ right to marry one another and people’s feelings towards liberals.

b. Select the appropriate inferential test for this research question. Your response should be about 25 words in length.

  • Chi-square test, Bi-variate regression, and scatter plot.
  • Confidence level.

c. Justify your choice of inferential test for this research question, including how the scales of measurement affect this decision. Your response should be about 25 to 50 words in length.

This research question will use a correlation experimental research design. This is because we are looking for a relationship between two variables, feeling of warmth towards liberals, and the level of agreement towards gay marriage. Because the two variables are nominal, we are using a chi-square test, if we were comparing two scale or ordinal variables then we would use a Pearson’s r test or a spearman’s test. The confidence level test measures the level to which the test is significant if it is significant.  Bi-variate regression analysis test measures if the relationship between two variables is linear and the nature of their relationships (positive or negative); scatter plot visualizes these findings.

4. Research Question Four: Is there a linear relationship between feelings toward conservatives and beliefs regarding gay persons’ right to marry one another?
a. Write a possible corresponding research hypothesis for this research question. Your response should be about 25 words in length.

There is a significant linear correlation (positive or negative) between people’s beliefs regarding gay persons’ right to marry one another and feelings toward conservatives.

Null hypothesis (H0): There is no significant relationship (positive or negative) between people’s beliefs regarding gay people right to marry one another and feelings toward conservatives.

Alternative hypothesis (H1): There is a significant relationship (positive or negative) people’s between beliefs regarding gay people right to marry one another and feelings toward conservatives.

b. Select the appropriate inferential test for this research question. Your response should be about 25 words in length.

  • Chi-square test, multi-variate regression, and scatter plot.
  • Confidence level.

c. Justify your choice of inferential test for this research question, including how the scales of measurement affect this decision. Your response should be about 25 to 50 words in length.

This research question is similar to the third research question. The only difference is that it is testing for the relationship between people’s beliefs regarding gay people right to marry one another and feelings toward conservatives instead of the difference between the relationships of beliefs regarding gay persons’ right to marry one another and people’s feelings towards liberals. This means that we will use a chi-square test because the two variables are nominal, and a bi-variate regression test because there two variables. The scatter plot gives a visual representation of this relationship.

Topic for Project 2:

  1. Explain what personal or professional reasons you had for choosing this research question. Your response should be about 75 to 100 words in length.

Most of us have been raised in a society where we are okay with gay people until it is our child or family member. Most of the time, people do not have a problem with gay people; they will even defend them in a fight. However, If you tell them that their son, daughter, or other family member is having a gay marriage, they will discourage them from getting married or judge them. They will make comments like, you can’t have a biological child with your partner, or their child will be stigmatized for having gay parents. Therefore, I would want to prove that there is a difference between being liberal and feelings towards the right to gay marriages.

  1. Explain the social relevance of this topic. Include at least one scholarly source or recent review article that relates to the social relevance of the topic. Your response should be about 75 to 100 words in length.

In most cases, people believe that the government should make policies based on opinions they believe are liberal. However, these policies would end upbringing conflicts in society and affect people’s well-being and health (Umberson et al., 2015). It is very important to implement policies that the society is ready to handle. It is assumed that liberals root for gay marriage. However, for a state to make any policy regarding gay marriages, and they want to implement the policy based on the beliefs of liberals, they need to consider the results of this research question (Dinesh, 2015).
