After reading and reviewing the three articles I feel that Netflix was right to remove the scenes from “13 reasons why,” Netflix should have done a lot of research on the effects of rereleasing a series with such a sensitive topic especially on the young and teenagers. Furthermore, they should have listened to the mental health campaigners who showed concern immediately after the release of the show. The report shows that the demographic that was most affected was that of children and teenagers aged between 10 and 17. People in this age group are still growing and are easily influenced by what they see on television and social media and may not have the mental capacity to process shows such as “13 reasons why” especially if they are suffering from any form of mental health illnesses. The fact that there was an increase in suicides in the months just after the show was released shows us that media (social or mainstream) has a major part to play when it comes to mental health.
One fact stood out to me from the CDC is that children can suffer from two mental conditions at the same time for example 73% if children suffering from depression also suffer from anxiety.
Why do you think there was a higher increase in suicide rate among boys than girls even though the protagonist of “13 reasons why” was a teenage girl?
