Make a list of the pros and cons of each of these suggestions to bring back to the committee for review. Share your list with group members.
Volunteer Overtime
This refers to Paid extra shifts that a physician chooses voluntarily for monetary benefit or to get more on-the-job expertise.
Pros
Those physicians who choose this special shift, which involves night emergencies and weekend duties, which everybody despises, get double time as well as a reward. For taking premium shifts or working overtime, some nurses make a lot of income every two weeks. People find it difficult to say no to such large sums of money. It also helps in inspiring motivated individuals to show their willingness for progress and aids in the retention of caregivers (Nursing overtime: Pros and cons in overtime, 2021).
Cons
- Fatigued workers are more likely to make mistakes.
- Nurse exhaustion
- Poses a danger of injury.
Cross-training with the regular non -intensive care pediatric unit
Pros
- Professional nurses take advantage of opportunities for lifelong training.
- Improved teamwork.
- Employee morale is increased (Hedges et al., 2019).
- Enhances workforce stability.
- Enhances productivity.
Cons
- It leads to dissatisfaction.
- Creates competition amongst caregivers
- It makes the nurses lose focus.
Closed-unit staffing
Pros
- Encourage nurses in the pediatric unit team to be self-sufficient.
- Improve teamwork among staff physicians in the pediatric units (Strayer & Ellen, 2008).
- Improved efficiency
- Autonomy and collaboration.
- Accountability and a huge sensation of satisfaction
Cons
- If something popped up, the administration could perhaps utilize it as a reason not to staff appropriately.
- Staff must understand that at periods of personnel shortages and high census, everyone must work together.
- There is a flexible mechanism in existence for call-ins or being floated.
Which suggestion would you favor? Why?
I would prefer closed unit staffing because it fosters more autonomy and cooperation, fosters a sense of organizational pride, and so increases productivity.
