Pros and cons of mainstreaming a deaf child

Knowing the best way to educate your child can be daunting task it includes questions like do I want my child to be homeschooled or attend regular school, should they attend private or public school. So when it comes to a deaf child the decision to take them to a regular or deaf school is even more tasking because it affects how they learn and how they will interact with the world around them.

When a deaf child goes to a regular school they have a chance of interacting and socializing with other students who are not deaf unlike a deaf school where all their schoolmates will be deaf. The down side to this is they will most likely miss out on deaf culture because they may be the only deaf child in their class and even the whole school.

Although being in a regular school can boost their self-esteem and encourage them to advocate for themselves it can also bring them down seeing as they are a special needs child they may encounter problems communicating which makes them stand out and may cause them embarrassment.

Because a lot of deaf children go to regular schools, the schools usually accommodate them and many schools now have mainstream schools are accommodating and have created an educational program that is deaf specific (Mainstream school vs deaf school, n.d.)
