Discussion 6: Chapter 11: Politics and Economy

Politics and the Economy

The United States is composed of a very strong economy that is majorly capitalistic. The economy is majorly capitalistic because it allows for the private ownership and management of various business enterprises as well as companies (Horne). Such ventures are not controlled in any way by the state, and there are various examples of such companies. Some good examples include Tesla, Amazon, Oracle, just to mention a few.

The United States economy is not entirely capitalistic as there exists some element of socialism in it. Socialism is focused on the ownership and management of various business ventures by the community, state, or various other types of government. There are some good examples that could happen even in various programs that exist in the country. Public infrastructure is just one of them, and even Social Security.

There are various ways in which the United States can benefit as a nation from being a socialist one. If I were given the job of making the country socialistic, I would insist on the involvement of all members of the public through various ways possible. I would require the government, together with the public, to work together in the education sector and even the health care sector. I would come up with programs that would allow the provision of free education since, by the time most Americans finish college, they find themselves in a pool of debt that is sometimes difficult to pay for them.

Such changes may be good or bad at the same time because they may cause a mixed reaction from various citizens. The people who benefit from actions would definitely see them as being good, while those being affected negatively by such actions and have been benefiting from them before will see them as being bad. Still, helping the majority will be the major priority.
