Journal Entry Week 9
During my first clinical practice, I had an opportunity to provide nursing care and management to patients. The patient’s relationships and communication with nurses were very good. One of my conversations with the patient was mainly about my career goals, expectations, and objectives. Besides, I also got a chance to ask the patient about healthcare services provided by nurses with the organization and his views about these services. From this conversation, I understood the patient was not satisfied with the specific level of treatment and care offered. Besides, the patient also has some operation procedures, which contributed significantly to the patient becoming uncomfortable while experiencing more pain. As I was helping the patient with drinking water, I noticed he was in pain and called my registered nurse (RN), who gave him painkillers. Besides, I was also required to regularly check up on the patient to ensure he was not uncomfortable in any way and to regularly check his performance and recovery (Edwards et al. 2018).
I believe my strength, in this case, including effective communication, empathy, and the ability to form good relationships with patients. These strengths are important in ensuring I understand more about the patient and take effective measures to improve their satisfaction and comfort, which are important in the recovery process (Grant & Goodman, 2018). My major limitation is based on the fact that as a clinical practice nurse, I still have not gained more and required knowledge to deal effectively with patients, which limits my role and impacts in the recovery of the patient. In this situation, my therapeutic use of self involves a planned use of my personality, judgment, insights, and, most importantly, perceptions as part of the general therapeutic process (Taylor, 2020).
