Leadership and Management Characteristics Paper

Introduction

As the healthcare sector remains one of the fastest-growing industries, it features different and important positions with unique educational needs. Therefore, the field of healthcare management provides both competitive salaries and, most importantly, job growth. As a result, it remains to be an attractive career choice. One of the most important management positions in the healthcare sector is a healthcare program manager. Leaders in this possibility are responsible for overseeing different program within a healthcare institution. Besides, healthcare program managers have different and important responsibilities based on different specialties.   

Leadership Characteristics

Leadership involves the ability to understand and focus on ways that help build up confidence and, most importantly, zeal among other people while creating an urge in team members to be led. To become an effective and successful leader, an individual needs to possess specific and different qualities that will drive, foresee, and improve organizational culture and environment (Janati et al., 2018). Most of the best leaders consistently possess essential leadership qualities like integrity, respect, ability to delegate, gratitude, empathy, courage, effective communication, learning agility, influence, and most importantly, self-awareness. Having these qualities ensures effectiveness in a leader’s ability to respond effectively to different situations that demand different types of qualities of a leader. 

Effective Leadership Qualities

Different qualities in leadership help to ensure positive impacts of leaders in any situation or leadership process. These qualities include willingness to listen, perseverance, honesty, selflessness, decisiveness, integrity, and most importantly, trust. Each of these qualities is important as they shape and influence how leaders lead others and, most importantly, their influence on the general performance of team members. As a result, applying such qualities will help improve performance, motivate team members and improve the productivity of any working environment (Janati et al., 2018).

The most important skills/characteristics of a healthcare program manager in the management process include staff management, effective communication, and relationship building.

Staff Management

Staff management ensures effectiveness in the ability of a manager to understand what is important for team members. Staff management, therefore, ensures effectiveness and positive outcomes in general performance and outcomes in all processes (Indeed, 2022).

Effective Communication

Logically, effective communication is an indispensable skill in different aspects related to healthcare program management. The goal, in this case, is to ensure effectiveness in communicating with other members to achieve desired outcomes.   

Relation Building

Relationships building helps form strong and reliable relationships between staff within different healthcare programs. These relationships motivate staff to work as one in dealing with and completing different tasks, thus improving productivity.

Key Words for Leadership Skills

The main important keywords, in this case, include motivation, effective time management, and flexibility.

The ability to motivate team members as a leader is critical in influencing and, most importantly, improving the performance and participation of staff towards achieving the goals of a healthcare organization. Effective time management ensures a healthcare program manager understands and plans for all important events or activities of different programs within a healthcare organization. Flexibility means a healthcare program manager works in a different situation and on any developing event to ensure operations and activities work are completed as planned and as different needs emerge (Grubaugh & Flynn, 2018).

Conclusion

Each of these skills/characteristics play a critical role in influencing performance, and improving the ability of a healthcare program manager to influence the performance of all members will increase the productivity of the healthcare organization. As a result, utilizing these skills will improve performance and improve the ability of a team to achieve specific desired goals and objectives.
